This is my first photoshoot of my close friends Matt & Trish with their recently adopted dog Jewel. Shooting with the family dog adds a great dynamic and the happiness and bonding is very evident.
I used a 70-200 lens at around mostly 120mm for the shoot. Afternoon shots like this are typically taken without a flash since the afternoon sun adds a fantastic back/edge light. For some of the shots we played with some off-camera strobing through an umbrella as a fill light. The resulting shots have a bit more contrast and environmental portrait-vibe to them. I think either method looks great.
